The world seems to be full of horizontals... skylines, roads, oceans... from ancient times our eyes have grown accustomed to scanning the horizon for dangers and other points of interest.
But when walking through the forest, don't forget to look up! Paintings are exciting when the eye is drawn all over the place. Up, down, around. Focal point...follow the line, and up and up again, around... and rest. Experiment. In my latest painting “Sydney From Cremorne Point”, by painting the the water vertically, I challenge the eye to find a new path through the landscape.
