Every morning at the château, I passed this staircase on my way to breakfast. The students were already comparing brushstrokes over coffee, but I always paused here for a second.

The hallway light never looked the same twice — sometimes buttery, sometimes grey. And just through that arch, I placed the Dordogne countryside tilting into view, like a half-remembered painting.

Still not sure if I ever made it to the top of those stairs.
