Lately I’ve been painting a lot of places I’ve stayed — guesthouses, borrowed rooms, one-night rentals with good windows and questionable cutlery. It turns out they make great subject matter… especially when the fridge hums like an old cat and there’s a view of the Harbour Bridge just casually showing off through the kitchen window. 

This one’s based on a night I spent in a friend-of-a-friend’s flat near McMahons Point. I woke up early, made tea in a plastic mug, and sat at the red vinyl table while the city quietly got on with its day. I left out the sink full of dishes. Artistic licence.
