The café was quiet apart from the clink of cups and the occasional scrape of a chair leg on the tiled floor. I’d just ordered a citron pressé when I noticed her—alone, deep in thought, writing in a small notebook with the kind of concentration that made the rest of the room feel paused. Maybe a student, maybe a traveller. 

Something about the way the late afternoon light hit the red velvet of the booth made the whole thing feel like a scene from a novel I hadn’t read yet.
