You hear them before you see them. One minute it’s the silence of a sun-drenched Italian village, and the next—out of nowhere—someone’s nonno comes flying around the bend on a scooter that’s probably older than I am.

I caught this scene in a blink, and painted it later mostly from a dodgy photo. What I remembered most wasn’t the blur of motion, but the confidence—as if the whole village bends slightly to make way for him every day around 11:15.
