It was last winter in France. The carousel had just started turning when I saw them — a little girl and her grandmother, hand in hand, hesitating at the edge of the light. Something about the shadows, the muffled cold, the soft glow of the horses made me stop.

I didn’t know them, but the scene felt familiar. Like something you remember from your own childhood.
