Walking somewhere near the Seine, late enough that even the cafés had quieted. The only thing moving was the river—and this cat, holding its post beneath the streetlamp like it had done so for years. I don’t know if it was waiting for someone, guarding something, or just enjoying the view.

I kept walking, but for some reason, I kept thinking about that cat.
